Twin update

Wednesday both babies sort of back slid in terms of premature lungs.  Baby A went back on the CPAP (albeit on a low setting) and Baby M is still on the vent and hasn't been weened yet.  They gave him surfactant therapy to help mature his lungs and while the surfactant worked, they didn't see the progress they had hoped.  They decided to do an EKG to see if he had anything else going on, cardiac wise.  Sure enough, he has a PDA.  Basically this is a hole in his heart.  All babies have this artery/hole while in utero.  In full term babies, the hole closes soon after birth.  In preterm babies, the hole sometimes has trouble closing and requires medication to help it.  This is the case with Little Man.  Basically, he has too much blood flow to his lungs and its preventing him from progressing to breathing well.  They started the first dose and we hope to see improvements in his stats and blood gas tomorrow.

This is the cause for all his other issues.  Hopefully the meds will do their job and he can start to get his ducks in a row as far as breathing room air.  We're so proud of him, he's been through a lot in his first two days of life and he's been so stoic.  I say this a lot, but he's JUST like his daddy in pretty much every way.  Well, except that he has dark hair like momma :)  I think that is all I contributed to that child!  

Baby A is doing well.  They expect to get her off the CPAP for good sometime tomorrow.  She's ready to be done!  She's a couple steps ahead of her brother, but that is to be expected.  For some reason baby boys are slow progressing when it comes to prematurity.  No one really knows why.  He'll catch up, but in the mean time we're celebrating every small milestone!
